Dogs VS Decorating

For those of us who love our pets as well as our décor, balancing the two can be a challenge. Here, Juli shares regular tips on doing just that, garnered from her decade of experience in dog rescue and ownership.

Fashionable Pet Necessities

When addressing everyday pet needs like water and bedding, it’s easy to get in a rut and just throw down any old thing. But there’s really no reason to do so.

With a little fresh thinking, you can make these utilitarian objects blend in better with your home’s décor.

Dog & Cat Linens

Washable throws and sheets are essential for protecting your dog’s favorite chair or other places where pets lay.  They keep the underlying furniture clean and can be whipped off at a moment’s notice if company is coming.

While no one pretends that such pet linens are the height of chic, you can at least make sure they match the room.  Why use random colors that don’t go with anything else? Check discount stores for affordable items in the right shades.

Another option is to buy a few yards of fabric in a suitable pattern. I like to use faux fur in the winter for a cozy feel. Animal print material in a medium weight is good year-round, and tends not to show dirt so quickly. Consider a neutral color close to your pet’s fur if possible; it will disguise hair better in between washings. Some material can be cut and used as-is; other fabrics will need to be hemmed at the edges to prevent fraying.

Water Bowls

Again, if it’s got to be there, it might as well look good. Instead of standard plastic or metal water dishes, consider creative substitutes like a footed glass bowl or ceramic vessel from a vintage shop. Sometimes pieces with a little chip are a great bargain, and the dogs won’t mind!

Or maybe there’s a serving piece in the top of your cabinets that you never use. Why not put it into service for your pet? Be sure to use only items that are labeled food-safe, as purely decorative glassware may be coated with paints that are harmful when ingested.

Cat & Dog Beds

Pet stores will have plenty of beds, but if the selection seems limited to plaids and hunting themes that aren’t your style, try a furnishingsIkea Pet Bed store with a pet department. Places like IKEA and World Market will have stylish items for both you and your pets.

Finally, when shopping for pet accessories, apply the same principles as you would when buying home décor: take paint color chips, fabric samples or room photos with you, and look for items that repeat those colors and patterns. The extra bit of effort will be worth it.

Visualize your Colors

One easy way to get a general idea of what colors you might like is by using a color visualizer. All major paint companies feature this interactive device on their websites.

One I've found helpful is at Sherwin-Williams.

Just keep in mind, you never want to make your final selection from these visualizers. The way something looks on your monitor and how it appears in real life can be drastically different. It's always best to paint a test patch first, and if you're still unsure, speak with a color consultant.
